I've used mine several times when the fob battery is low.

So you know not to park the passenger side tight against a wall.

How often does your fob battery fail? They last for years and you usually know when they’re about to give up for good.

As an aside, how long would you expect the key fob battery to last on average?

Never needed to replace in my last car, so that was 12 years and going strong before I successfully managed to write the car off.
On current car the original battery lasted about 8 years, but replacement batteries have only lasted a couple of years.

My dad's Micra has the hidden keyhole on the passenger side. I'm not sure how much help it would be if he needed to use it. The car is usually in his garage hard up against the wall that side!

I do the same with my Renault.

I had one issue when I thought my battery had died in my fob after not using the car for a couple of weeks. Car seemed dead managed to squeeze down the side to get the key in the passenger side couldn't get an arm through the door and it turns out the emergency key not only just opens the passenger door but it also doesn't turn the alarm off. Came in handy with my 5am start and the garage seemed to make the alarm even louder. Luckily it turned out the car had gone into some odd hibernation mode and 5 long minutes later the fob started working and has done since.

No. I know not to buy a car with no physical lock on the driver's side.A couple of places I park, including right now, I have to park tight up against a wall.

Not really a problem then a new battery every 8 years if you don’t buy cheap replacements.

Yeah like that will be reliable. Does an expensive battery always last 8 years? Not 7? Not 9? What if the key gets wet and the battery is shorted? What if the car battery goes flat?

Much easier just to avoid cars designed by numpties. Or those who CBA making a RHD model properly.

And we're right back to post 1. :o

I checked every pocket of my coat before putting into the washing machine. Twice. Except the one I never ever use so forgot about it. Which for the first time in several years happened to have my car key in it..................

Well, if it gets wet at home, then just use your spare key...
