Without looking at the paperwork that you have been given then it is impossible to give a definitive answer. That said, Glow Worm's website states the following:

Quote: Is there anything that I need to do to keep my guarantee valid?

Yes !!!8211; in order to validate each year of your guarantee the appliance needs to be serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer, in line with our recommendations. The Benchmark Logbook will also need to be completed upon installation and updated at each annual service by the servicing engineer. Please note that the cost of the service is not covered by the Glow-worm guarantee.

What is covered by my Glow-worm guarantee?

Your guarantee will cover you for the repair of any defects related to the manufacture of your Glow-worm appliance. The repair must be completed by one of our Glow-worm guarantee engineers and will cover for both parts and labour.

Your guarantee will not cover any defects that may have arisen as a result of misuse, or manufacture. Full terms and conditions will be provided alongside your confirmation.

Does using a non Glow-worm engineer for servicing or repairs invalidate my guarantee?

No. If you don!!!8217;t use a Glow-worm engineer for your servicing or repairs then you will need to ensure that they are Gas Safe registered but it will not invalidate your guarantee. However, your guarantee would not cover reimbursement of any costs that you incur.

How can I contact Glow-worm customer service?

You can telephone our team on 03301003142. Unquote

I worry slightly about Glow Worm's use of language. You are only covered for faults that occur 'as a result of manufacture' but without sight of the full terms and conditions it is impossible to say how limiting this might be. The key thing here is that the repair must be carried out by a Glow Worm appointed engineer. Moreover, the warranty only applies to the boiler not to the other components in your heating/hot water system such as the thermostat or zone valves. This is normal. The latter, if new, are normally covered for a year by your installer.

As far as cost is concerned, £89 for an annual service is par for the course. I paid £85 to have my boiler serviced this year. It took the GSR engineer about 10 minutes to inspect the boiler and carry out various tests. Remember, you are not just paying for the engineer's time. There will be some back office functions; he will have a van; some test equipment to buy/maintain; travel time etc. My advice would be to find a GSR engineer that you can trust. Part of his role is to detect potential problems before they lead to an expensive repair.

Finally, Glow Worm will not insist that you take out an extended warranty. They have no legal right to do so.

Thanks Hengus for your comprehensive response. I was sent just a couple of poor quality pages of ts&cs, part of which I copied to you previously, along with a bunch of references. I will ask for their ts&cs when I speak to them tomorrow. I'm not happy about using Glowarm's engineer because I had 'phoned one of the "referrers" (from the aforesaid references) who was kind enough to recommend a particular engineer she had been sent. However on the day it was due to be installed, someone else turned up. I guess they were taking advantage of my being single and elderly! The guy wasn't happy about the fuss I made and for asking for proof he was a GSR.

It seems a lot to pay for 10 minutes of a GSR's time but that seems to be the standard rate. Aren't any chemicals involved in the service or cleansing? I'll ask when I make the appointment. By the way, the t&cs mentioned that Glow-worm (the manufacturer) offers a guarantee of 7 years. Perhaps I should ask for those ts&cs. I do share your doubts about what is meant by "result of manufacture" (probably sloppy editing!) I might raise the point.

The next step will be getting a plan for a yearly service. Would the GasSafe website be the place to find a GSR engineer though I wouldn't know about reliability.

Once again I'm grateful for your time and expertise. It has helped enormously. Kind regards

Finding a reliable GSR engineer can be tricky. Talk to your neighbours; have a look at your local Council website for a Trusted Trader and/or Which.

Thanks for the link above which I will follow up and your other suggestions. As for "neighbours" this is suburban London which is becoming less community-cohesive as more houses are being sold to developers and diverse groups, mostly renters, are moving in...which is why I look to these forums for help and value advice such as yours. Thanks again.
