Getting them when first on sale

Does anyone know of a web site or fan site that has general advice on finding out about concerts in advance and buying them direct when they first come on sale?
It seems like the moment something really good comes on sale all the tickets are bought up by touts and ticket agencies who boost the prices through the roof.
For football games for my favourite ream I'm on several fan forums and am known there so when I have a problem getting tickets I can usually get some via my online friends but for Theatre and concert is seems like a minefield that only those "in the know" can negotiate.
There must be some How to pages for fans out there - or we could start one here (and please - no obvious smart answers like why not phone up the venue? If it was that easy the likes of Viagogo and stubhub would be out of business)

I follow bands I like on twitter, who usually announce tours and when tickets will go on sale in advance.0
