Move in date problems.

Hi first time poster here
Me & my girlfriend are in the process of renting a 2 bed flat and have completed all the referencing required but we are having problems getting a move in date confirmed.
Before starting the referencing process my girlfriend called the agent to arrange a move in date of June 1st which they put forward to the landlord and gave my girlfriend a ring back within the hour to confirm this was ok, so we paid the referencing fees and started the process.
Our referencing was completed on the 14th May(Found out via an online tracker) but I hadn't heard anything back from the agent so on the 15th May I gave them a call to confirm everything came back ok, which they confirmed did and then said we will get in contact with the landlord to confirm the move in date and send over the contracts.
I have given them a ring twice since then(18th May & 22nd May) but they have said 'sorry we can't get hold of the landlord'. Does anyone have any idea what happens if they haven't heard back from the landlord by the 1st June? As I don't have much hope for this landlord to get back to agent if they haven't after a week.

It bodes well going forward then if the LL wont make contact with you to arrange the date that you move in and pay them rent!
In normal circumstances after this length of time I would be walking away but you have to consider that the agency may not refund reference checking if you instigate the walk away.
I would be tempted to send the agency a clear email stating that you do require the property from the 1st june and ask them to confirm this back to you within a set timescale.
Have you signed the tenancy agreement yet?
Until you do you are at the mercy of the LL.
Perhaps you could request a time from the agent that would be convenient for you to sign the tenancy agreement in order to give you both clarification and certainty that the LL does actually intend to rent you this property.in S 38 T 2 F 50

I would get the expected start date of 1st June in writing from the agency - they are the LL's representative. Something like
"As discussed we applied to rent ABC property for £x per month, starting 1st June. On y date, you confirmed this was fine subject to referencing, which we have now completed. Please confirm this by reply and advise the next steps to how we can move in."
Sounds like you paid referencing fees on the basis of the 1st June move in date, so if the LL pulls out of that you'd be hard pressed to argue a breach of verbal tenancy, but you can atleast argue the referencing fees should be refunded.
Its understandable you need more notice whether you'll actually be moving or need to make other arrangements, but if you pull out before 1st June then you'd likely lose your referencing fee etc.0 -

As saajan_12 says write o them clearly.
Or pop in and ask to sign a contract (and stay till it's produced!). Make sure you get/keep a signed copy.0
