Just came back from Algarve and when I took the hire car back I had only used a quarter of a tank of diesel yet was charged for a full tank, have complained to hertz but they are ignoring my emails!!:mad:

Is that the same reason you are ignoring the Car Hire Forum then..?0

Hi,
in my own experience Hertz are slow or don't answer emails but they do have a very good customer service desk, where, if you call they will look into your issue there and then. If they can fix it immediately they will, if not they will (and do) call you back with updates.Save 12k in 2020 #19 £12,429.06/£14,0000 -
what did you agree for fuel?
usually the options are full-to-full or to pre-pay a tank of fuel and return it empty...I don't believe they offer a refund on any unused fuel which is why most people would choose full-to-full...have never had any issue with Hertz with this...when they ask if you want to prepay you just politely say "no, will return full"0 -

As Caz mentioned, it all depends on what fueling option you agreed at the time of the hire.
Hertz only offer three different ones:
Their "Fuel purchase option" means that you pay for a full tank of fuel and you can return the vehicle with as little or as much fuel in it as you wish bearing in mind that:
another other option is "full to full" in which case you take the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank. Please note that we do not provide a refund for unused fuel.
The final choice is to collect the car with a full tank and let the rental company refuel when you return it and charge you for the fuel used (plus their service charge for doing so).0
