Wheelie Bins

Hi,

We have purchased our first house, a new build in preston (lancs) and today I have registerd for some wheelie bins with preston city council.

They are charging £15.40 for delivery of each bin (3 totalling £46.20) and state on the website collection is not allowed they have to be delivered.

First, How can they justify charging delivery per item when they all come together?

Second, Is it on that they wont let you collect your own bin from the depot and not have to pay what seems to be a stealth tax?

Cheers
Tom

I think these are more questions to ask your councillor rather than house buying/renting advice points.

But in general I can see the logic that if anyone's got to pay for the council supplying new wheelie bins it's the new households wanting the extra bins.

    You aren't paying delivery

I just looked at the website, you are paying for the bin

It says if you are a new build , ask the developer to pay for the bins

I'd be grateful they will send you a bin, I requested one 4 months ago and still I get no response from the council

Stealth tax? How much profit do you imagine there's going be from three wheelie bins and associated admin for 46 quid?

We bought a new build in Leyland in February, and had to pay South ribble council £100 for our bins. They did say sometimes the developer pays for them, but if they don't tgen

If the depot where they're kept has no public access, no insurance for it and no facilities for taking the money, then it would make sense to have a delivery-only service.

We don't know the circumstances, but it's clear, you are paying for the bin and the delivery all in one.

Now comes the shocker: 'Please note: we re-condition and re-issue wheeled bins. Therefore the bin(s) you receive may not be brand new.'

New build and secondhand bin a distinct possibility? Ouch!

My council used to charge £40 per bin if you collected it .Now they charge £22 . Your £15.40 per bin is a bargan

    £35 each here.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
