In store refund, following an expired card

Hi,
I bought an expensive dress in store, tried to return it to the shop but as my debit card has expired and i now have a new number, they won't give me a refund without a letter from my bank, seems ridiculous as it would be going into the same account, anyone had any experience with this problem or any advice.

Why is it ridiculous? Seems perfectly sensible to me. In an online transaction you wouldn't be happy if they remotely processed a refund on a dead card number and you never received your funds.Hi,

Just get the bank to confirm the card is a replacement for the old one so you can get your refund.0 -
I had this before and the store was happy to refund me as a giftcard0

I've had arguments with customers in the past because of this. It's my understanding that it's to prevent money laundering and fraud.
Some people have even gone as far as cloning cards and returning high value goods so they can transfer dirty money to new accounts by using the store as a mule.0 -
Just a thought here but if your bank card shows your account details can you show them the old and new cards so that they can see the refund will go back into the same account?0

No, because a fraudulent or cloned card will have the correct account details on it, even though the money refunded onto it would be sent elsewhere.gettingtheresometime wrote: »Just a thought here but if your bank card shows your account details can you show them the old and new cards so that they can see the refund will go back into the same account?0 -
They absolutely can refund to an expired card.
A quick Google search confirms this including http://asos.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1959/~/what-happens-to-my-refund-if-my-card-is-no-longer-in-use%3F
A UK retailer who specifically say it has to be the old card rather than a new one. This aligns with my (now 10 year old) experience in the banking industry. Refunding to an old card isn!!!8217;t a problem unless the associated account has been closed.0
