Thanks glasgowdan - my house has been up for sale before and it didn't sell (it was at the time of the crash!). It needs a bit of work doping on it - I started a thread about advice painting the outside of it but no-one has responded :-(

I have bought a small sprayer and litre of the weedkiller that Dave recommended - I would be happy to take it with me when I go so it isn't wasted. I have a garage and shed which is like my workshop and am keen to make some headway this long Bank Holiday weekend!!

Feel better about cracking on now!

What would be the advantage of using salt? I can't see any, when there's an effective product, not harmful to ground water or concrete, available at a reasonable cost.

    Hello everyone,
I bought the weedkiller as recommended along with an 8L long handled pump spray and have weedkilled the gravel!!! The weeds are slowly losing their vigour and I am hoping to be able to rake/pull up the critters at the weekend.

THANK YOU all for your advice, much appreciated!

Yes it takes a few weeks to have a proper effect. The chemical disrupts photosynthesis, so it takes a while for the plant to 'starve.'

In our instant everything world, people often claim glyphosate 'doesn't work,' when usually they just haven't given it time to do so.

Thanks Davesnave - I am going to keep my new pump handy so I can be a bit more proactive with the little critters so that I stay on top of them.

I am hoping the 1L will last me a while!

I am currently painting the outside of my house and up the scaffolding I can see lots of areas I need to put a bit of focus on hahaha

I use several methods removing weeds, one is spray glyphosate, the other is using roundup gel for weeds near some plants, or pull weed up depending on weed and size the other is using a burner like this http://www.wilko.com/weed-killer/parasene-weed-burner/invt/0341509 for instant results

I cleared about 55m2 of various bits of concrete and crazy paving last year, and got as far as laying and compacting a base of MoT1 before running out of money.

As a result, I had a pretty established crop of weeds in place, as I try and pick up the patio project this summer.

I bought 4 bags of rock salt the other week (no mean feat at this time of year) to see if it would work. I randomly scattered one bag’s worth around the area, and the results were impressive. The very next day, you could see the weeds starting to die off, and within the week they’d virtually all gone.

The best and cheapest weedkiller for gravel was sodium chlorate. Alas the likes of Monsanto (producer of Roundup) lobbied governments to ban it (with claims that it could be used by terrorists, despite the fact that it was feeble in comparison to TATP) and it's no longer available.

Rather than use the toxic and carcinogenic Roundup, I use a trowel and/or a blowtorch to get rid of weeds in my gravel drive.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.
