Help with online streaming videos please

My OH and I used to watch a lot of streaming TV series/movies on our old Dell Inspiron 510m, using a 1MB broadband connection... and this worked fine.

We have bought a new Inspiron 6400, and coincidentally our broadband speed has been increased to 2MB.... BUT we now find it very hard to watch these streaming videos, ie they download very very slowly now (or may get stuck on buffering) and sometimes not at all. In fact, I'd say it seemed to be much better on our older laptop and slower broadband connection. (all other internet usage is totally fine though)

Can anyone please advise how to improve this? Is there a setting that can be changed? Or is there a way to make these streams download faster?

Any help would be much appreciated!

PS - just done a speed test and I am indeed getting about 1900kbps, which is twice as much as I used to so that shouldn't be the problem.
