Gravel Drive Construction & Drainage

Hi All,

Currently installing a gravel driveway on my front garden (council are installing a dropped kerb).
However, I've given myself a massive headache thinking about the drainage that is be needed for our gravel driveway. I've got advice from numerous people, looked for the regulations and advice online, and I still seem to get varying opinions.
So far we have excavated the ground to approx 6 - 7 inches. This used to run towards the house but we leveled this significantly when excavating the ground.
I was originally going to lay my weed membrane, spread and compact MOT type 1 as a sub base, install gravel grids, spread gravel.
However, I am unsure as to whether I should make this 'more' permeable or if it will be ok?
I have considered installing a channel drain across the front of the house to move any potential rainwater back into the ground and away from the house - or into the manhole.
I have also considered use larger stone as a sub base (Type 3 etc) but I am not sure what this is like to compact for gravel? It is also significantly more expensive.
Yep so at a bit of a stand still (!) so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

  • Having the exact same issue, mot type1/drainage or go for a permeable sub base, most likely the latter. The area i need to prep is roughly 100m2 so need to get it correct.

I ve gone down 150mm for the sub base but wondering if i could get away with less, with the ground being quite rocky sub soil.

If i was looking at using mot type 3 or 4/20, does anyone have experience of using either material?
