Santander Mortgage PPI Claim Rejected

I believe I was mis-sold PPI on my Santander mortgage. I made a complaint to Santander and was told that they "cannot trace any Paymentcare attached to my mortgage." It clearly states "Mtge Protection Pr" on my mortgage statements and I sent Santander some sample copies of my mortgage statements.
I then approached the Financial Ombudsman Service and they claimed that the mortgage protection payments on my statements refer to life cover rather than PPI. I am sure this is incorrect so I asked the Ombudsman for proof of this - the Ombudsman replied that they won't be able to provide proof of this as Santander's screenshots are for internal use only!
It feels as though I'm just being fobbed off and the Financial Ombudsman has been as much use as the Civil Aviation Authority were when I tried to make a claim for a plane that was 5 hours late. That was a lot of work that eventually led nowhere as the CAA were completely useless at getting the airline to pay the compensation supposedly legally due to me.
I have to reply to the Ombudsman's letter by 24th May, otherwise they'll close the case. Even this seems to point to them trying to fob people off as quickly as posssible as if I was on holiday, I would have missed the deadline!
I'd greatly appreciate any advice. Has anyone else been in this position? It certainly feels as though both Santander and the Ombudsman are trying to fob me off with Santander initially denying all knowledge of any mortgage payment protection and then Ombudsman making out it was life cover and not PPI
Many thanks in advance for any help
Kind regards,

The term "mortgage protection" is used for life assurance when covering a repayment mortgage. It feels as though I'm just being fobbed off and the Financial Ombudsman has been as much use as the Civil Aviation Authority were when I tried to make a claim for a plane that was 5 hours late.
You are making a complaint about PPI. Santander say it is life assurance. So, your complaint is about a product you dont have. What do you expect the FOS to do?I'd greatly appreciate any advice. Has anyone else been in this position?
Yes. Some people do mistake different types of insurance as PPI. Each one fails for obvious reasons. It certainly feels as though both Santander and the Ombudsman are trying to fob me off with Santander initially denying all knowledge of any mortgage payment protection and then Ombudsman making out it was life cover and not PPI
Provide your evidence that it was not life assurance.
Otherwise, it looks like it is you that is being difficult. As it stands, you are the one putting in a complaint about a product you didnt have.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Note that it is not somehow wrong simply to have insurance, but even in the event you did have PPI you have to show it was somehow mis-sold in order for any insurance to be refunded.
So how do you think this Life Cover was mis-sold to you?
You've asked FOS to "prove" the insurance was life cover, but the reality is that the burden of proof lies with you as the complainant. It is you therefore who must disprove the assertion that you had Life Cover, not PPI.
Face it, you are complaining about a type of insurance you did not have.
So I think you are going to have as much success with this as you did with your tardy aeroplane complaint.
