1800s cottage: Do I need Fascia & Soffits?

Thanks for your reply. I decided not to fit fascia/soffit to cover the gaps but do need to do something as the gap between external wall and roof, across the back of the house meant I was losing lots of heat in the winter. So the best option seems to be to insulate(over the gaps) using expanding foam from inside the loft space but leave one area of the loft space open to allow for airflow and cover that open space with mesh so birds/squirrels etc cant get in.....
Seems a fair compromise and wont change the look for the property with it being grade 2 listed...0
