Hi all..

I currently live at home with my mum and she receives PIP and help with mortgage repayment. If I were to claim Universal Credit, would it affect her benefits?

thanks!

To receive help with her mortgage payment she must be receiving an income based benefit - ESA? JSA? Income Support? Pension Credit?

What component of PIP does she receive? If it is daily living then there should be no non dependent deductions from her mortgage payments. Her income based benefit would not be affected.

What are you doing at the moment? Working?

    Hi thanks for response!

I believe she gets ESA! As for PIP if I remember right she gets daily living and the lower mobility amount.

Currently studying, but will be graduating in a few months and will need to go home to look after mum for a bit. We know she will lose the disability premium she gets for living alone, but was just wondering if it would affect themoney she gets towards her mortgage and rates x

So you will be going home and then claiming UC, while you look for work ?

If you provide any care for your Mum, this should be documented as to what caring activities are provided and how long these take, so you have a total hours per week you are caring. How long you provide care for will affect work search e.g hours of work you are looking for. This is quite important for when you discuss your UC claim with a Job Centre Work Coach.

When you claim UC, you would have to note living with Mum and that you will be doing some caring for her. You will see that when you apply, it asks questions. This will trigger a verify caring activity, which will be picked by the Job Centre, hence need to collect this information.
