Being charged for phantoms calls from bt!

I was out if the country since 6th May. When I accessed my bt online account noticed I have been charged for 13 calls I have not made and do not recognise the number. Very puzzled all the calls were made on the same day one after another on the 11th. I am still out of the country and cannot query it until I return next week. I have asked my husband and he does not know anything about it and seldom make calls. This seems to be a mistake, has it happened to anybody before? Thanks

Yes, it happened to me but there was a clear line fault on my line - lift the reciever and you got a storm of white noise instead of a dialtone - which was some problem in the cabinet so it's likely lines were crossed or interfering somehow. I couldn't have made some of the calls as I live alone and was at work (and had witnesses to this) at the times they were made.

I made a formal complaint (link on the website when logged in to your account on bt.com ) and someone in a UK call centre called me on the mobile number I provided in a few days and cancelled the charges.

Is your husband in the country? Can he query it now?

  • This came up the other day on another thread.

I had the same as you, and it transpired a BT engineer had been working on a cabinet outside my house. Somehow the test calls he made were debited to my bill.

All the calls were to the same number, made one after another, and which turned out to be a BT number.

You need to report the calls to BT and ask for a credit on your next bill.

The exact same happened to a friend of mine. It turned out that BT have a way of testing active phone lines within a roadside cab, the test essentially calls a number and if it connects the phone-line is active.

This time around, the BT engineer was calling the "talking clock" and had been connected to my friends phone-line thus my friend got the charges on their bill.

Could be worth checking with BT?
