This can only work if OPs girlfriend / wife has lived in OPs house as her only or main residence. Perhaps she has not, as OP says she is looking to rent out her own house after the upcoming purchase.0

GirlFriend (GF) to remain living in her mortgaged property.
I will purchase a property in my sole name.
We will move into one of the properties and get married (planned anyway) and rent out the other one,
We will then sell the property being lived in and purchase a new home together.
This should save us some cash, as Stamp on my sole purchase with be circa £5k. Stamp on joint purchase will be circa £22k (and not the enhanced £42k). Obviously some costs associated with double move, sale and purchase fees etc,
All in all probably a 2 year plan.0
