There are instances where people do need to carry cash, however you can take precautions.
We stayed in a hotel in Italy that would only take cash.
We did not pay in one go, we went to the cash machine a few times and paid in stages.
We also put the money in a wallet that was chained/strapped to our person and hidden inside our clothes.
We also watched each others backs.

It would be interesting to know whether there was a compelling reason in this case for carrying a large amount of sterling cash.

As the site has been down this is the first opportunity to once again thank those of you who have taken an interest in my misfortune.

No I didn't have any other form of insurance. And yes, in retrospect, it may appear careless to carry that amount of cash, but we were on our way to the hotel, you see it happened on the first day of our holiday.

    Thanks again everyone.
