Get a halifax clarity card or a creation everyday card . Use it for day to day spending in supermarkets etc , take minimal amount of cash , if you need more cash these are no fee at foreign ATM .

Clear balance when you are back home

Avoids the risk of coming home with excess Euros

You could also open a Starling account, again, no fees for withdrawals at most cash machines and no foreign exchange fees. I use this most of the time with the Clarity and Barclaycard platinum travel cards as backup.

If you're relatively sensible and don't drink out too much, I bet you'd get by on £500.

Don't take any, except perhaps a few pound notes as backup. Keep your money in pounds until you pay or withdraw cash using one of the recommended cards.

Don't let a payment terminal bill you in pounds and decline any ATM offer of 'Conversion'.

Many Spanish ATMs now charge for withdrawals, but you can still find some that don't.

Any card can sometimes fail or be lost etc, so always have backup, even if it's your regular debit card. A good option is https://loot.io/

Yes, that came as a surprise to us about 10 days ago in Paguera, Mallorca, using firstly a Starling and then Halifax Clarity card at two holes in the wall.

Both ATMs flagged up a charge warning before actioning to withdraw - one was Santander, can't remember the other, think it was Sabadell.

Our third attempt, at Targobank (German based) was fee free.

I have a Santander 123 debit card - should have remembered to take it as there are no fees using Santander branded ATMs in Spain and the Canaries.

I had the same problem with atms in Spain charging, managed to find a Deutsch Bank atm in Barcelona that didn't charge.

I've read elsewhere that it seems that ATMs at the following banks in Spain do not apply a fee on "user friendly" debit cards.........not yet, at least.

BBVA - BVM - Caixa - Banco Popular Telebanco - IberCaja - Abanca.

Obviously punters should check and confirm before committing to a withdrawal.
