The garage doing the repairs said that none of the faults were dangerous. I don't know, just going by what they said.
I don't think they are going to get them done today I have been back three times now, said to go back at 4pm but not hopeful of doing it today and no time next week. I might try to get it done elsewhere if they don't do it today.

OP, the MSE way would be to get the brakes and strut fixed, then your car is okay to use under the old MOT, i.e. whether or not it is retested. Worth noting what façade says about scheduling - if you get it tested one calendar month minus 1 day before the expiry date you basically get a 13 month MOT certificate. So you could have it tested on the 30th May, and it will cover you to 29th June 2019.

The MOT station said 31st May as being last day for retest and that would also cover until 29th June 2019? Is that correct, if so, I will get the retest booked for then, might as well get the 13 months if I can.

You have 10 working days to take the car back for a retest so 31st is the last day to get it retested under the old rules, any later would be a full test under the new rules. The earliest is 30th to preserve the 29th June test date.

Why would it be retested under the old rules post 20th May? I have not seen anywhere that states retests will be tested the previous way.

Anyhow, I would imagine the tester who retests it will be following the same standard protocol of checking what’s been done and passing it anyways.

It will not need an emissions test, unless it has failed one previous and needed one on a retest to pass for example.

So if the EML is on for the retest, it should then fail from 20th May regardless. If the light is off, then fine.

Only the items that failed the original test will be retested, nothing else will be looked at.

    That is not entirely true.

You can fail one a retest. You can even fail your own retest if you notice something that should have failed in the first place. Doesnt look good though.

For example, if I jacked a vehicle up on the bay to check a suspension rectification, then notice a cut in the tyre, it would fail a retest.

No that's fine, as a non-mechanical person you can only go on what you get told. Last year I took my MX5 out on its first post winter ride out. There's a 1 in 6 hill I went down and a few miles later there was that burning brakes smell. By the time I got to the next village another 5/6 miles away to turn round there was smoke pouring out of the passenger front wheel. I managed to free it off, let it cool down and drove back home using the brakes as little as possible and put a new brake caliper on it. Also ended up having to put a new brake disc on as the heat had warped that too.

yes, that is what the MOT station confirmed with me when I rang as I can't get the repairs done before tomorrow.

I took it back to the garage that was supposed to be repairing it, he can't fix the strut as it needed putting on a ramp which he doesn't have, having looked at it, he said he doesn't know why it failed, it was not bad enough for a failure. Also the brakes, he could't find anything wrong with them. Anyway, as they are n the failure notice, I will have to get them done because if I take it for another test, it would have to be after Sunday so it would have to be done on the new rules so will fail again anyway a the sensor hasn't been done. I will try to get the original things done, strut and brakes and stick to the retest under the old criteria, then I can get the sensor light fixed at a later date.

Thanks guys for all your help.

By the way, I went this morning to another test station that also does repairs to get a quote for the strut to be done there. I told him that I was going to get the repairs done but not have the retest until the end of the month and as long as the vehicle was made roadworthy by the repairs, its old MOT was still valid, he tried to tell me it wasn't, that he had never heard of that and a fail was a fail and that invalidated the old certificate. I told him that that was what the DVSA said.
Its no wonder that joe public like me don't know these things if people like him that should know don't.

Not correct. As MOT special notice 07-18 makes clear,

'Vehicles presented for a retest on or after 20 May but tested before that date will be the same as now, only subject to a partial retest. This means that only the original test failure items and any associated items are retested.

For the items retested the new standards will apply. In most cases this will make no difference but for a small number of items where the standards have changed, for example, diesel emissions - it will mean the new limits apply.

During the retest, there is no requirement to test the new areas introduced by the EU directive (for example, reversing light, MIL light). However, if in the course of the retest defects in these new areas are seen then the defect must be recorded – which in the case of a major or dangerous defect will mean the retest will fail.'

It's going to be hard for an MOT station to claim they didn't see the MIL light on a retest.
