How to ask ebay for money back, fraudulant purchase?

Sounds simple but I cannot get anywhere forward.
We are abroad for a while and before leaving UK purchased an item and paid by Paypal. Then got a message several days later saying the purchase was from a compromised account and was removed. Ebay says sorry but Paypal reports that we cannot open a case for this item, contact the seller!
Tried to message seller as per Ebay advice but cannot as the form does not recognise the item number.
How do I get a refund? Does Ebay refund automatically?
Thanks in advance.

Why don't you open a case in eBay under "purchase history". (Item not received)Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Your statutory rights are not affected.0

I tried but as the listing has now been withdrawn I cannot do this.0

When an eBay account is compromised, the seller's unauthorized listings are reversed. This would mean the item index would have been deleted also.
You will need to contact PayPal directly, as the payment processor. Explain to them what has happened. Once the representative confirms the situation, they can open a transaction case under "Item Not Received". If no involvement is received from the other party, the case will be decided in your favor and will be refunded.
If the transaction was covered under protection, the seller wouldn't be at a financial loss by refunding you, as they are covered against unauthorized activity.Advice provided from this account does not consist of any professional knowledge. You're probably back from holiday now, but with a mobile, thanks to the EU, you can call UK numbers from France or any other EU country at the same rates as if you were here.0
