I'm curious, if I ever needed to go to small claims how do you do that? Is there a website somewhere you click "apply"
or do you need to find a lawyer and he does it for you?

You issue a claim through the court's online system at https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/web/mcol/welcome.
It is very easy to do. You don't need a lawyer.
Before issuing a claim you should send the defendant with a 'letter before action' specifying your intention to issue court proceedings if the case is not settled within 14 days.0 -
A good starting point might be MSE's Small Claims Court guide.0
