I don't mean to sound nasty towards anyone for criticising our purchase and how we did it but we did everything we could of done to make sure that vehicle was not stolen and we were failed because the car had been cloned
The only additional things you could have done is check the chassis and engine numbers.
Looks like he’s done a good job on you to get the paperwork for the car since you were buying from the genuine owners address.0 -

The problem is however that the number plates were false and so I was checking a car that hadn't been stolen rather than the car we were buying, which should of had different number plates had it not been stole, we have taken every step we could to make sure we wasn't buying a stolen car
Was the whole process completed on the same day?0 -

We thought this was a good enough reason why he didnt invite us in
I presume it wasn't a secure entryway that needed a key or fob to get in?
Something thats puzzling me though is how did you manage to get the car registered in your details without the owner of the real car (that was registered at the address you viewed it) without objecting. The same way that you were notified you were no longer the RK when the real vehicle was sold, they would have been notified they were no longer the RK when you applied as the new keeper and any reference they used would have became invalid when you obtained your v5.
It sounds like they were possibly complicit. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

In the past I would have said the dvla never did their checks. However a log book has been obtained used and a new one issued. VEL cancelled and possibly a refund to the previous keeper.
I’m not all together sure the keeper hasn’t sold it and then reported it stolen.0 -

Yes we did the checks while driving the 120mile round trip to the car and withdrew the money from the bank on the same day0 -

Well to honest with th the time delay between me getting the V5 and receiving the '!no longer the registered keeper' was only Babur 6weeks so I Think they did contact DVLA but I was just presuming that the car may of been sold0 -
If the full t&c's of the HPI check have been met then you stand a chance of getting your money back. I expect they may try and wriggle out of it but at least there is a chance.
It sounds like you've opened a claim. That's probably the most sensible way forward at this time. Good luck and let us know how you get on.0 -
Hi,
We have just had a very similar experience, however paid via bank transfer. The police have recovered the car and the bank are looking into the transfer to see if they can trace the money. However it has been 2 weeks and we haven’t heard anything. What was the outcome of this in the end?
The stolen car that we bought has already been paid out to the original owner so apparently the insurance company will now own the car. But potentially they may come to us and offer to sell us the car for a reduced price. I am not sure how long this usually takes though..0 -

Year old thread, and you're PPRd so can't (officially) respond... but this was exactly my thought on reading the thread. Cloning reg plates and VIN plates, in two places with matching references, could be quite difficult. (Not impossible, but not easy to do so and make them look original).

You won't get a reply from the original poster as the thread is over a year old but you knew that anyway didn't you.0
