  • I very much doubt standard 'business use' will cover the use of a van used in removals and waste disposal.

But its not only waste movement. If he does removals he would need insurance to cover the items being moved. If he also provides labour (local man with a van will pick up fence panels and help fit them) he needs public liability insurance. Working out exactly what services to provide is the first step, insuring for that service is the second step. Actually getting work is the third step.

Given the difficulties everyone has outlined, what about him looking into other ways to use the van. Couriering maybe?

If he is fit and up for working outdoors he could see if the council need bin men. Many councils struggle to recruit for these roles. It's not as badly paid as you might think.

Waste collection is outsourced to companies such as Veolia and FCC Environment - councils haven't operated these services for years. The civic amenity sites and landfills are also all privately owned or franchised.

Hope your nephew’s concern is all sorted out now. I have no experience in doing such work, but I did hire an experienced rubbish removal Hertfordshire company before. And just to tell you, it is highly important to opt for a company that operates with insurance and license. With this, you can also have that peace of mind or guarantee that you’re working with trustworthy professionals. And as for those who wish to work in such field, know that insurance and license are just two of the necessary things to have. Without it, you can boost your reputation in this industry or might increase the chance of getting penalised, depending on the implemented laws in an area or region. You can simply search online to find out about the other requirements and qualifications. Good luck!

  • What about offering general transportation services - I'm sure there are loads of things that people want moved but can't get it into a car yet don't want to hire/drive a van.

That’s not true everywhere :) where I live (North Yorkshire) it is still council in my district and the one I work in. Both refuse collection and amenity sites.

They might still be owned by the council but they're franchised out. I checked with my husband, who's worked in that industry for 30+ years. He personally manages 100+ sites, including ones in Yorkshire - in fact he's going to one in Doncaster on Tuesday and the poor !!!!!!! has to stay there overnight.

In any case, this thread has been resurrected after over a year.

A Waste Carriers Licence is a must. These are obtained from the Environment Agency .
As for Goods in transit insurance, this can be bought as a seperate policy and isn't that expensive. I had a quote at £260.
