Day One
Today we begin our romantic break as we head to Belgium, where love is in the air, chocolate shops line the streets and delicious local beers flow… Joining our Luxuria coach at the Sheffield Interchange, we make our way to the port of departure for our ferry crossing to the continent.
Upon arrival in France, we will continue our journey east into Belgium, and on to the delightful city of Bruges, where we stay for the next four nights. Our hotel, The Hotel Olympia, is located around 1 mile from the centre of Bruges (approx. 20 – 30 minute walk).
Day Two - Included meals: Breakfast
This morning, enjoy free time to begin your exploration of Bruges. Maybe start with a romantic stroll along the charming canals, and find your bearings in this beautiful city. Stroll hand-in-hand through the historic centre of Bruges, just like something from a fairy tale, the UNESCO world heritage site is a joy to explore. With pretty little chocolate shops to pop into, and a host of quaint cafes and bars to choose from, why not enjoy a hot chocolate, and maybe a Belgian waffle to share, sit back, relax and watch the world go by?
This afternoon we include an excursion to Ypres, the historic town that is home to the famous Menin Gate and the Last Post Ceremony. You'll have time to spend at leisure, exploring the town centre. See the Market Square, or Grote Markt, that is dominated by the huge Cloth Hall with its magnificent belfry.
In the evening, pause at the Menin Gate, where the moving Last Post ceremony is performed daily. The Menin Gate is a memorial dedicated to the missing of World War 1, and bears the names of 54,896 officers and men who died between 1914 and 15 August 1917. Every evening since 11 November 1929, buglers have played the emotive Last Post at 8pm beneath the archway. Following the ceremony, we head back to our Hotel in Bruges where you can enjoy your night, maybe enjoy a romantic meal or a night cap… or two.
Day Three - Included meals: Breakfast
Today, we enjoy an included excursion to Ghent, guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Affectionately known as the 'Flower Capital of Belgium', this small and vibrant city is Belgium’s best-kept secret. Offering a quirky and fascinating cultural cocktail, brimming with rich history, culture, and a trendy city vibe, Ghent really is heaven sent. Enjoy impressive views over this stunning city by visiting the mysterious The 'Gravensteen' or 'Castle of the Counts', that dominates the city, a perfect backdrop for a photo of you both. Or, you can climb the famous belfry, the proud symbol of Ghent, with its enchanting views over the city.
The city has a vibrant and exciting pedestrian area, packed with restaurants and cosy bars, and cafe terraces that lavishly spill out onto the open spaces. You can even visit the famous Shoe Bar, set in the market square, there’s over 500 beers on offer, including 'Max', served in a 1.2 litre boot! Be sure to try the Ghent speciality, Kroakemandels, deep fried, salted peas that may not be so healthy … but are certainly worth the indulgence. There will be ample free time for you to explore this pretty Belgian city, and maybe enjoy a spot of shopping, before we return to Bruges later this afternoon.
Day Four - Included meals: Breakfast
Spend a romantic full-day in Bruges, where you can begin your day by enjoying a leisurely stroll over the Lover's Bridge to the Lake of Love, also known as Minnewater. With its tranquil surroundings, this already picturesque lake is made even more magical as many white swans glide along the waters. Wander the winding narrow streets and across pretty bridges, which span the serene network of the canals that Bruges is famous for. We recommend taking a horse and carriage ride through the city – an enjoyable and romantic way to see the sights including the Medieval delights of the Town Hall, and the old Market Hall, with its famous 47-bell carillon in the belfry.
Bruges also has plenty of museums and galleries, with collections of Flemish art and historical relics on display. But, if you're after something to tantalise your taste buds, visit the Choco-Story Museum and indulge in a Belgian chocolate paradise. Delicious treats are made by hand and sampled by you, perfect for those with a sweet tooth. Of course, there will be the chance to make a few purchases to take home. Visit one of the many lace shops, showcasing the incredible quality of the craftsmanship within the city, or maybe stock up on some chocolate truffles to bring home for family and friends. After your day of sightseeing, why not enjoy to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and a scrumptious pastry at an open-air cafe, bringing your romantic Belgian break to an end.
Day Five - Included meals: Breakfast
