Water stain on ceiling.

The leak is now fixed but I want to paint the ceiling. From previous experience, a water stain tends to show through ceiling paint. Do the professionals use something to seal the ceiling first?

Stain blocker primer - very expensive per ltr but worth every penny


Also you will need to clean paint brushes/rollers in White Spirit - with this, otherwise use cheap throw away ones.


Also use with all windows open - as this will knock you out

A cheap solution which worked well for me in our old property when the upstairs maisonette had a leak into one of our bedrooms was to paint the stained area with white gloss then re-paint the whole ceiling with a couple of coats of emulsion.

Paint the stained areas with a stain blocker such as Stain Stop or paint it with white undercoat.

Either way then emulsion as usual.

I have done both and I think the specialised stain blocker gives a preferable result.
