Hi,

My car has done 60,000 miles. Corsa. A ticking noise is coming from the engine. Somebody suggested the timing belt. Could it be?

Thanks

It could be almost anything. Could you be more specific?

    What sort of ticking
    Fast or slow
    Loud or quiet
In time with engine revs or road speed or random
    And so on.

Even if it's not the cambelt , if you are not aware of it ever being changed then it's due anyway

How old is the Corsa and engine size, as most corsa's have a chain and are known to jump and break the engine, (IE: bent valves) they can also wear the timing case and put a hole in it.

So best not to drive, and get it checked ASAP, if you have breakdown, call them and say you have a noise from your engine,

  • Most likely just tappets if not too loud; nothing to worry about in that case. Only very old Corsa's have belts, later ones chains. Chain noise is more of a thrashing sound.

You can hear it when the engine starts. Not too loud just enough to hear.

Leaking exhaust manifold or leaking injector?
Any fumes inside the car with the blowers on?

Possibly tappets or camshaft but very difficult to say.

What age is the car? How often have you had it serviced?

Sounds like oil taking it's tme to circulate, after it has been standing.

Check oil level. If low, top up with the CORRECT Vauxhall oil (Remarkabley good value on ebay)
If level is ok and you've not had an oil and filter change in last year/10000miles, it's well worth doing, as the oil may well be 'worn out'.
If you have had a recent oil change, did they use the correct grade and Vauxhall spec?
