Virgin Media and Linksys cable router setup.

I've never seen cable broadband before so I would appreciate some pointers.

The router is a Linksys cable modem :model no WRT54GS-UK which I picked up myself.

The cable box is an NTL E08C007. The Virgin "technician" told them it was wireless.
It has 3 connectors - power, rj45/network and co-axial cable of some type.
I can run a nework cable directly to a laptop and it's picking up the internet fine.

I've plugged the cablebox into the cable router via a standard network cable.
1) Is this ok or do I need to use a crossover? I assume it's correct if it's ok because the laptop's working ok.

2) What are the settings for the router?
I've set the connection type to DHCP but thereafter I'm lost.
Domain name ? etc.
The cable box is giving an IP of 81.191 something..
The routers IP is 192.168.1.1.
Both of them can't hand out addresses?

I was given a technical help phone number for Virgin Media, but
a) nobody answered for 2 minutes.
b) The house has no landline and I was on a mobile and its a 0905 number.
God Bless NTL. They might be gone but their customer service lives on.

Any help greatly appreciated.

The cable box ip is your real external ip, the router 192.xxx is a local ip, and the router handles the translation between the 2.

As far as your pc is concerned, it's ip address is 192.168.1.x, and it's gateway address is 192.168.1.1, that is all it needs to know regarding ips, because the router does all the hard work.

Don't really understand what your problem is, as you say that it is working. Connect NTL modem --> Router --> PC that's it. Most routers will accept either type of cable as they auto-sense. If you want to set-up the wireless, it's all explained in the user manual and basically you just need to enter a WPA-PSK encryption key to secure it. This same key then has to be entered into any PC that needs to connect to the router over wireless.

Cheers albatross for making sense of the IP addresses. Makes sense now.
So the router should have DHCP enabled. Good. Thank you.

    To reiterate, it's not working.

If i run a a cable directly from the cablebox to a laptop it works.
If I run a cable from the cablebox to the wireless router and then another from the router to the laptop, it doesn't.

Still need to know if there's a domain tag or anything else that needs put into router. and what they are.

The cable modem was made by Ambit for ntl. That’s Ambit’s model number for it. Everyone else calls it an ntl:250.

Are you powering down, when you swap what’s directly connected to the cable modem? If you get it working with the laptop then just unplug the Ethernet cable and stick it in the router, the modem will carry on as if it’s connected to the laptop and won’t talk to the router. Each time you swap what’s connect to it, you need to switch the modem off and on.
