Car Insurance Excess & NCD

A couple of weeks ago I was hit by an unlicensed and uninsured driver who unfortunately wrote my car off. I am with Tesco Insurance and they quickly paid me out but minus my excess and my NCD is now put on hold too.

I got a crime reference number as the driver disappeared off into the sunset although we did eventually find the driver and the passenger after a witness found them parked up a few streets away. To cut a long story short, there was insurance on the other car as it belongs to the passenger's father. I believe that they have not informed their insurance company (Allianz) that there has been an incident. Fortunately I have a dash cam which clearly shows the accident not to be my fault. I sent this to my insurance company.

The police have been to interview the driver and he admits everything, he had been at court only 4 weeks prior to this incident and had his provisional license taken off him for also driving with no insurance. He obviously hasn't learnt anything from this!

My question is, how long do I need to wait to get my excess back? My insurance company are pursuing the other insurance company but I haven't heard anything further about this. I am also concerned about my NCD. My insurance will be needing to be renewed in a few weeks time. Will my premiums increase?

Sorry for so many questions but I have never had to deal with anything like this before.

Thank you.

Your premium is likely to increase over this irrespective of whether you get your NCD reinstated before renewal.

Do dummy quotes online now with and wihout this claim in your history to get an idea of what difference in premium to expect

Your excess is an uninsured item

You need to pursue the third party insurer to reimburse you along with any other uninsured losses you experienced

If you have legal cover as an add on to your policy you can use that to pursue for reimbursement otherwise DIY

If you want to change insurance company at renewal explain to your chosen company about your NCD.

Ask if they will alter the premium if and when your NCD gets reinstated. If they agree then ask for confirmation in writing

It can take quite a long time unfortunately for claims to be settled.
The other company may not reply to letter until forced e.g. threatened with court, that's just how it works.

Your insurer is only going to consider this a "non-fault" claim once and IF they have been fully re-imbursed by the other insurer. Certianly likely to be more than a few weeks.

I am sympathetic but you should no this is a no CLAIMS discount and no a no blames discount. You've made a claim so unless you protected it, then you will lose NCD. Did you protect it.

The bad news is that you can also be loaded because you've had an accident as insurers claim that people who have accidents are statistically more likely to have another one.
This means your base premium will go up and not just the discount (unless you have an insurer that doesn't load you). This is a double whammy.
