Window warranty

Hi guys,

Looking for a bit of advice.

We bought a new house just over a month ago and the lock in the handle has broken on one of the upstairs windows. We’ve got the warranty from the previous owners who fitted the winddows and there’s still 6 years left on it. We’ve called to find out how to claim etc and they’ve said as the person paid for the invoice of the windows no longer is the home owner the warranty is invalid.

This is disgusting. I’ve searched the internet for some kind of act but I can’t find anything.

We want the handle and lock fixing so we can open our window!

If the warranty is not transferable , I'm afraid you are out of luck.
Do you have warranty docs? Do they mention transfer to new owner?

Quite likely. What does the warranty say?

I was able to repair the lock and handle on one of my windows myself by looking at videos on youtube. Might be worth a try.

The double glazing industry is as rife with sharks and charlatans as estate agency.

There are good companies about, but the previous owners may not have chosen wisely or cared about the terms of the warranty that didn't affect them.

However, if a handle is all you have wrong in your new home, rest assured, you've done well!

Had this problem last year when my daughter bought her first property. The sunroom/conservatory was less than 2 years old and in order to continue with the rest of the guarantee she had to pay £120.00 plus VAT for the privilege. The guy explained that a single call out would be £60.00 plus parts so we took the hit.

Having said that replacing a window handle is simple -just 2 screws. You can easily do this yourselves.

Most warranties for most products are non transferable, the original purchaser must still own the product for the warranty to be valid. Some home improvements products are, but you cannot count on it.
Many warranties for windows only cover non moving parts, window handles do break and are relatively easy to replace, not much different than a door lock replacement.

Thank you everyone. Will check out you tube now
  • Agree with others, try fixing it yourself. The lock on one of my windows broke and it was easy and quick to sort out. If it's broken already its at least worth trying to fix yourself and save a bit of money
