I have been given a Linux based tv box but have no ideas on how it works.
My aim is to use it to turn my normal tv into a 'smart' one a bit like using an android based box.
I cannot find any options to instal an internet browser on it.
Any ideas please guys on how to achieve my aim?
Thanks

Somewhere on that box it should have identifying marks like make and model? A picture would also help. if you put a screen on it and turn it on, and boot it some identifying info should appear0

Just because it's linux based doesn't necessarily mean that you have full access to install the normal sort of linux desktop apps on it. Many embedded devices, such as routers and things, use linux internally, but present entirely proprietry interfaces to the world.
e.g. I suspect the latest humax pvr's are linux based because they use a linux native filesystem (ext3) for usb memory sticks. But you probably wouldn't have any way of accessing a shell or anything useful like that.
OTOH the whole point of the gnu copyleft is that it mandates that a user is free to upgrade / replace the free software with new versions as they choose. Of course, that would just be the kernel if the user-mode stuff is proprietry.
(FWIW I use a raspberry pi as the basis for a linux-based smart tv system...)0 -

A few more manuals here, but you may have to use google translate. It also mentions about updating the box
