Switching suppliers, what a nightmare!

Bought a new build house in December 2006, both gas and electric were supplied by EDF.

In May 2007 I decided to switch both supplies to N Power. My gas switched over without any problems but my electricity supplier never changed.

I called both EDF and N Power and was told by both that yes they were by electricity supplier. A few calls later and it came to light that the house builder had registered the wrong electric meter to the wrong address, EDF had already spotted this and had adjusted their records but had not informed the main database.

When N Power went to take over our meter they input our address and took over a house round the corners meter.

At the moment I am getting bills for my meter from EDF and also the house round the corners meter billed to my address from both EDF and N Power.

They insist I've got nothing to worry about and its all being sorted but I'd have thought after 5 months it would all be done and dusted.

    Hi,

Ok, for a start you should not be paying for another address.

When Npower applied for your supply a mismatching meter alone would not usually cause this.

I think there is a possibility that your address is held against both MPAN's in the MPAS database. So, this needs to be corrected. Despite the builder doing this, your Supplier can literally change the addresses to match the meter number to get around it. Not simple as other Suppliers are involved but it's resolvable.

So, do EDF have your correct original MPAN and correct address/ Now, contact MPAS and ask them to confirm your MPAN, address & meter number. If that all matches, Npower have erroneously transferred another customers MPAN and stopped them getting billed by their current Supplier in the process!

The MPAN matching to the address really matters more than the meter number for a change of supply. There have been lots of incorrect meter numbers held in the MPAS systems, it's a well known industry issue with a whole project out there looking at correcting it.

Now, if there were 2 MPAN's with your address on, that would cause you problems like this.

P.S. you can find your MPAS from this list:
