Apologies yes, i mean to include unless they trailer it away - which is unlikely for a retail customer to be able to do, but not beyond the realms of possibility.

If there is any variance from that - as you say for example if they drive it away - then the retail customer retains full customer rights and the dealer would be breaking the law.

Driving straight to MOT would still be in breach of that.

Tried to call the dealer, number seems to be not in use. So there I have my answer.

Quite possibly clocked and you should check the MOT history and car history thoroughly. If you cant get a definitive reason, then assume its clocked. Easy done on a mk4 GTI.

These cars are old and ropey now, so be very careful of what you're buying and of why the dealer HASNT MOT'd it. Every dealer has somebody who can MOT cars cheap so it would worry me that the dealer isnt MOTing it and as i said risking selling it to a retail customer.

Yes. The dealer is deemed to be the expert. Ignorance is no excuse. They MUST do their due diligence.

Owning a MK4 Golf GTi I would say not at £500. Which model is it ? If it was a 1.8T with leather and a great set of wheels and tidy body then maybe. I have just put mine through MOT with a few minor issues and that cost me £350 at non main dealer prices.


If the car was close to passing the garage would MOT it and sell if for £1000 - £1500. If the garage was respectable they would not have it near the forecourt.


At this age for me , service history condition is everything looking on Ebay for a private sale at £1000 - £1200 would be far better. I bought my GTi 1.8T full leather tidy body 6 months MOT for £1000 2.5 years ago. It's now got 30,000 more miles on it. Are you capable of wielding a spanner OP ? they are not that difficult to work on.


In summary go private with 12 months MOT and check the MOT issue to see if advisories are fixed between MOTs. Avoid ex boy racer cars.

With no MoT its scrap value only. If it was going to fly through the MoT don't you think the trader would have got an MoT?

I feel he is not MOT'ing it for a reason, you can also check the MOT / Mileage history on the ,gov website or something like, total car check, I use this on my phone, and check every car before I look at it, so i go armed. and its free if you register. or a few quid to do a full HPI check

No, because an MOT is like £35 at my local garage. Go and get it MOT'd and then sell it for £200 more would be my argument. If they won't get it MOT'd I would fear that something was wrong and they don't want you to know about it.

If this was £150 private seller then possible - £500 at a "trader" no - there are plenty of sheds for sale on the E bay you can buy!
