Unplanned interruption - Gas
A burst water main damaged a gas main on Saturday evening and as a result tens of thousands of litres of water went into it. It's now Tuesday and they hope to restore the supply 'within a day or two'.
Although cold showers and no hob are a pain at least I don't need heating so I'm fairly relaxed about it. I am not sure of the compensation due, though. The website states:
I have two questions:
Can I claim for the initial 24 hours? The above suggests to me that I have to wait 24 hours before the clock starts ticking.
Do I have to claim? As I see it this could be that after claiming they will automatically arrange to credit my supplier but it could be that I don't have to claim at all.
Perhaps they will advise in due course but I'm curious and at least want something good to come out of this!

n the event of an incident, we do our utmost to restore gas supplies as quickly as possible. However, after the first 24 hours, affected householders will be compensated for time without gas. You will receive £30 for each 24-hour period without gas, which is paid automatically through your gas supplier. Small businesses will receive £50 for each 24-hour period without gas, which will also be paid automatically through your gas supplier.

Yourf quote implies compensation for all 24 hour periods from the start.
Maybe they will just do a general broadcast to suppliers based on affected postcodes?
There could be a dozen or more suppliers supplying the affected area - another possibility is that they will do a letter drop to the affected properties with details of how to put in a claim.0 -

There will be no need to claim anything; you will be paid any compensation due automatically through your gas supplier
