The insurance industry has pledged to crack down on "excessive" differences in premiums for new customers and existing policyholders.
The plan aims to iron out some of the controversial big differences between premiums for new and existing clients. The move follows new rules that force firms to display the previous year's premium on renewal notices.
The new guidelines apply to home, motor and travel insurance, but not pet or health cover.

This pledge should not be an excuse for not continuing to look at the whole market at each renewal for the best deal at the time, then comparing it with this "ironing out" pledge.0

It is absolutely disgusting - had my home insurance renewal today from halifax - they wanted £340, 25% increase on last year. I rang them to question this and they offered a £16 discount
I then entered my details as a new customer and now have the exact same cover for £199.40
Unfortunately i have fewer options as there was a historical subsidence claim on this house 20 years ago!0 -
If they are prepared to offer you cover as a new customer with this subsidence claim in the history others may do so0

This is good news for lazy people who put little effort into their fiances finances, but bad news for people who shop around to get the best deals who get cheaper insurance effectively subsidised by the lazy people.0
