Hi the older gen Porsche Cayman is something I would be interested in. Not so sure about the Lexus rc and the Audi a5, looking for more of a drivers car. As for depreciation, I would be looking for a used car not brand new. So for cars like the Cayman, gt86, 370z their depreciation would have taken a hit already. The Bmw m2 also catches my eye but it's slightly above my budget but I suspect it'll hold it value quite well over the coming years

    Such as which cars?
    Exige, Cayman, M3, S2000 etc.

Or if you want to go older, Celica, Supra, MR2, and that’s just from Toyota.

Unless the engine is the main reason to buy there are a fair few other similar cars around.

Having had a good think my heart is set on experiencing another car. The Cayman interests me with its well balanced chassis and boxer engine, seems what the gt86 should be if it had more power. S2000 and mx5 are great cars but looking for something with both low end and top end power, I miss that coming from the straight 6 m3 to the rx8. Perhaps a 370z nismo? So looks like it's between a 1st gen Cayman or a 370z? Any thoughts?

As you've just had one engine fail, be aware that the Cayman S has a reputation for 'bore score' which will require a rebuild. Be very careful if buying privately as they might just be moving on a car that has started to use oil which is one sign, others are sooty exhaust and ticking engine in the later stages.

On early cars there is also the IMS issue which can scrap the engine if it fails.

If you are getting it rebuilt I can recommend a couple of specialists depending where in the country you are. It's not a job for just any garage.

    +1

    I'd be using a recommended RX8 specialist.

Personally.... i'd get the work done and drive on at it a couple of years at least - you get some value for your spend and you've still something to sell at the end of it and recoup some of your spend anyway (bearing in mind the car is currently close to worthless).

If you scrap it now, thats just another RX8 gone which would be a shame as theres so few left.

I had a PZ. It was an excellent car. I would get yours fixed. An engine rebuild at some point is, to a great extent, factored in to long term RX-8 ownership.

    Love the RX8.
The PZ is a worthwhile special edition with nice suspension tweaks, that I think were carried over to the facelift (R3) RX8. So if you're going to replace your car like for like, you're limited to these rare ones.
RX8 values have fallen through the floor due to the engine issues - you don't know who has looked after it, or not, so the advice would be to buy your super cheap car, and budget that £1800-£2000 for the rebuild, leaving you with a really nice sports car for £4,000-£5,000.

So my advice is - get the engine rebuilt. Check the RX8 forum for a reputable rebuilder local to you.
i don't have a particular budget in mind, it entirely depends on the car but for the right car, i willing to spend up to £30k. was thinking about either a new subaru brz, mazda mx5 or the lotus evora.

None of those will rev like an RX8. Subaru/Toyota is low on power/grip and not that nice an interior. And will cost you more.
Mazda MX-5 - I like them, but they're more common, and less practical, and depending on the age you buy, will cost more/.
Lotus Evora - you're jumping up several categories and budgets here!
370Z - will cost more money, I'm not a big fan of the interior.

I wrote my RX8 off in a really pathetic way, and got £4,000 for it - I was glad of this as values were in free fall, but they've stopped. Any that have survived, are being looked after. There are far fewer for sale now, and it's got 'future classic' written all over it IMO. I won't go so far as to call it an investment though...

I'm in a 350Z now by the way. I miss the revs!
However boiling up the car and blowing the head gasket are definitely mutually inclusive where wife's are concerned.

No head gasket on an RX8 so you're safe there!
    PLenty of options -

    Porsche Cayman
    Audi A5 Quatro Black Edition
    Toyota GT86
    BMW Z4M coupe
    Lexux RC200t

I don't understand - you've spent money repairing your car, something else will go wrong, so buy another second hand car from this list - are these cars indestructible or something?!
