Temporary Work place
Comments
-
Thank you all for your replies, I really appreciate them especially given the glorious weather outside. Having read them I may have misunderstood what a temporary work place is.
I am a doctor who was on a full time contract till August 2016, I was then on a zero hours contract with the same hospital. Due to the nature of the work I was unable to stay in my own residence and as such had to stay in hospital provided accommodation which I paid for out of my own pocket. As well as this I have professional expenses I would like to claim (above the 2.5K limit that one can claim using the online form) and travel expenses occurred when attending these mandatory training courses. I was taxed on an estimated income which I exceeded, hence HMRC wanting more from me.
All in all the total of the expenses reached 6.5k without housing, 10 with. There is also a laptop that I purchased for work use, however I do not think I will be able to claim that back. Having spoken to colleagues of mine who have been in similar situations, they have all told me they have been able to claim all of these things, including house and food. I am uncertain if this is the correct thing to do, and if it is how I would do this correctly. Some have suggested a full tax return, others have told me there is a specific refund form I can fill out.
Many Thanks0 -
HMRC have a form called a P87 for claiming tax relief on expenses however this isn't going to be of use to you as the amounts you are intending on claiming are above the limit (£2,500 I think) for a P87.
So your only avenue is to register for Self Assessment and complete a tax return.
From experience on these threads housing is quite an odd thing to be claiming for, don't remember anyone ever bringing it up before but presumably you know why it would be an expense eligible for tax relief.0 -
Where did they say that?
He didn't - I was suggesting that it might be what he meant by "temporary workplace".0 -
Thanks again for the replies. I have previously filled an online P87 but quite rightly this is well above that threshold.
I will fill out a self assessment then and see if they accept housing.0
