Temporary Work place

Hi all,

First post here so please accept my apologies if this isn't the correct place.
Between August 2016 to June 2017 I was working at a temporary place of work, and have recently received a letter from HMRC saying my tax was miss calculated and I owe them ~ £5k.

However I have claimed none of my expenses associated with this temporary place of work, which I think amounts to about 9k in total for the 2016-2017 tax year. How do I go about claiming this back? I've looked at the self assessment tax form but I can't find a section for this.

Many Thanks .

you put them in the employment expenses section, but as mentioned above, it rather depends what the expenses relate to if you missed that section.

Thanks for the replies. My expenses were travel related. I never filled out a self assessment as I was on PAYE, do I therefore need to fill out a whole self assessment return? I've previously filled out the tax relief form online, however this year my expenses are above £2500.

you state your expenses are for 16/17 and you have not done a tax return for that year. I also note you are not contesting the £5k tax demand itself from HMRC so how come you underpaid by so much?

For you to try and counter that by submitting a very large expense claim retrospectively means you will be sent a tax return to complete

"If your claim is for previous tax years, HMRC will either make any adjustment in your tax code or send you a tax return to fill in."

Actually I think that doing a tax return for 16/17 would be a good idea anyway as it means you will then know if the tax demand itself is correct anyway.

did you really spend 9k on travel over an 11 month period and forget to claim it? As you state it was a temporary workplace, why did your employer not allow you to claim expenses? What sort of travel was it? Public Transport or your own car? To get £9k of own car expense would equate to having done over 28,000 miles, do you have records to prove that?

What makes you believe this was a temporary workplace?

The employer sent him to work in (eg) Plymouth when he normally works in (eg) London?
  • Temporary workplaces can be a tricky one.

There have been posters on here in the past who believed their commute to a permanent, but short term, place of work qualified as a temporary workplace.

It was no doubt temporary in one sense but not for tax relief purposes.

    Where did they say that?

The reason I mention it is because OP wouldn’t be the first person on here to misunderstand temporary workplace rules.

It could just have easily as been a temporary contract but depending on the circumstances (eg a single engagement for an umbrella or agency) could still be deemed a permanent workplace.
