Changing my childrens names

I am about to re-marry. I have 2 children from my previous marriage which for the record did not end well, we still have issues mainly about the children.
I can appreciate that my ex husband would never agree to me changing their names, I wouldn't expect him to, however is there anything to stop me from hyphenating their name and adding mine.
It would only be for personal reasons, like schools, doctors etc I wouldn't want to change by deed pole.
Basically it's my way of using my name without having to get his permission. TIA

Everything you have listed is not personal. Hyphenation is still changing the name. The father still needs to give permission.0

You need his permission if he has parental responsibility.
Found this
"Some parents may want their child to be known as a name different to that on their Birth Certificate (their legal name). It is possible for this to happen; however, a childs legal name must be used when registering them at schools and doctors for example. If one parent disagrees with the use of the known as name;, they can apply to the court for an order to stop them doing this."

Registering with school and doctor isn't personal reasons, it's official records. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Schools, doctors etc aren't personal, they're legal. The name they use will be the name on their medical records and on their school and exam registration. You can't change their names without their father's consent for any legal purpose.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
You can request to be known as whatever you like at school, in the work place etc but for official purposes, tax when they are older, loans, mortgage, driving licence, passport, marriage you would have to use what s on the birth certificate so there doesn't seem much point.0
