Ending Tenancy - Overlapping HB?

Hello.

I viewed a flat on 8th February this year.

They said I could have it.

Housing association called me on Friday 4th of May to tell me they want me to sign a AST on Friday 11th of May to start my tenancy on Monday the 14th of May.

I said I have to give a months notice but they said I should ask for overlapping HB 'for health reasons'. I am on ESA.

How do I go about it?

You'd do better asking on the benefits forum here. But my guess is you write tto the Housing Benefit Dept (whoever they are - check your paperwork!), give them the details, and ask!

Many councils rarely offer duel housing benefit these days and ask a lot of questions and require a lot of evidence to verify way. Often just moving house isnt enough. Goodluck in your application

    Thanks.

Yes I have applied for it before and was turned down so the LL of the old tenancy was after me for four weeks rent. The agent was really confident I would get it,but of course they just don't care, same as this HA officer.

This housing association starts all their tenancies on Mondays only so I don't see how ending tenancies could ever run smoothly.

I don't know if it's different for different councils but with ours I was told I could claim an overlap because you can't keep an HA waiting; you either take the flat when it's offered or it goes to the next person. Equally the previous property has a notice period so there will be a period of being liable for both properties. I didn't apply for ours in the end as our (private) landlord was happy for us to leave with less notice. Check as well with regard to health reasons as we qualified for an overlap another time as I spent a week getting our new place ready as my son had various health needs so there were things I needed to do before we moved in to make the place suitable for him so we were able to claim benefit for both properties for a short period :)

Thanks LocoLoco. Maybe it's different for a HA than a private LL then. It would be nice to get an overlap then I may even get my deposit back to pay for carpets.
