Access to driveway blocked

Hi

We are considering a house for which there is a space at the front that could be a potential driveway, but access to it is blocked by the pavement (image should make this clear).

The pavement with grass (or whatever it is called) extends to block the potential driveway and I am not sure what purpose it serves? Presumably, the road and the pavement with grass are owned by the council, can we request for the road be extended to get access to to the potential driveway?

EDIT: Added another pic

  • Looks like you'd be asking the Council to sell your OUR public amenity land for your proposed private property.

Can't see them going for it personally....

Obviously neighbours would be likely to protest anyway - cue for neighbourhood dispute.

You can request whatever you want. Why do you think the council would agree

The purpose it servers is green open space.

If you must have a driveway, move along and find a different house, this is not the one for you.

Even if you were allowed to extend the road to make a drive, the cost would be out of proportion.

I have added another image for clarity. Yes I do understand it is a public property, but how frequently would the grassed area be used by the public (it's not a park)? What difference would it make to the public if the road is extended to shorten the grassed pavement? I don't have hopes our request will be entertained but was wondering if anyone has had any luck in the past. Of course council may ask us to pay for this and I don't know how expensive that would be then. There is no other parking for the house other than by the road at the front, which means anyone can park there.

That is the sort of estate I grew up on. Spaces like that are absolutely precious, it is where we would play as children, getting up to all sorts of things. Parents in the street would be happy knowing we were close, and they could see us if they stuck their head out the front door to check.

I would hope that the council would feel as I would, that taking away a piece of grass like this to allow more parking would not be a good step.

I would say you have a 0.1% chance of them saying yes.

And a 100% chance of them wanting you to pay if they do, and I would estimate it would cost at least as much as the house.

The other issue you have, is to create your one private space, you would be blocking 2 end of road parking spaces clearly being used at the moment. Do NOT be at all surprised of you find people keep on parking at the end of the extended road so you can;t get on and off your drive.

    Wrong question.

What advantage would it be to the public to extend the road?

As the answer is "none", then what are you going to do to make it worth our while? How much would you pay, in addition to covering the entire cost of the works, to make it worth us giving up our grass?

The answer is almost certainly "nowhere near enough to make it worth the hassle".

I think it would be rejected as you would be taking away 2 public use parking spaces for you to have a private drive and a small amount of green space which they possibly might have needed to account for the amount of houses they built.

Where does that path go around the side? Does it lead anywhere other than your property?
