We did a similar move. We hired 2 men and a van from a local removal firm. We had hire the van because that came with various moving aids such as sack trolleys etc. They wouldn't let us just hire the men.

Our move was only about 50 yards but we had a leather suite to move and they had the protective covers for them.

Thoroughly cleaned wheeliebins can be very useful for this sort of thing.

But don't leave unattended on on the pavement on bin day ...

Quite.

And they are not, under any circumstances a temporary repository for either pets, or children.
Surely someone has to bite on this?

Oh I don't know.

I'd have loved a clean wheeliebin to play in, as a child.

And no, I'm not putting that in my mouth!

As a slight counterpoint, it might be useful to use something like this:

(though I believe Mr Dunlop has invented the pneumatic tyre since that example)

The reason is you might find the journey is something like:
Front door A -> driveway/garden -> van -> [drive the van] -> van -> driveway/garden -> front door B

While you haul stuff by hand with the trolley, you can haul it right up to the front door (or inside if you make a ramp). This solves having to carry things across the front drive/garden.

On the other hand you can load lots of boxes in a van, while the trolley can only carry a few at once. Really depends what the distances are like and how many people you have.

We moved a similar distance, although we had white goods too.
Hubby used his works van for heaviest stuff and clothes, kids toys etc got black bagged and wheeled down in my twins tandem pushchair!!!!!
We did also carry some bits, and like others have said it wasn't fun!!!

Edited to add ours was a 240m move

I think if we did it ourselves for the small stuff we'd hire some sort of trolley rather than carry stuff, we already have a small one that could take a few boxes in one go. We have a few weeks to work this out anyway. Thanks for the advice everyone.

You can hire trolleys from most supermarkets for just £1.

Which is fine as long as the OP only wants to turn left.

We did this once; around the corner and across a tiny, little road used more as a football pitch than as a thoroughfare. We had two strong men, an enthusiastic, wiry teenager and me (neither wiry, enthusiastic nor a teenager) Must have been about 50 yards and we were all knackered by the end of it. Large wardrobes, white goods, 3 seater sofa, etc.

Took all day. Cost us two cases of lager... Never again and we were (relatively) young and fit then.

I did similar about 15 years ago and I carried the lighter bagged up stuff whilst my parents took the big stuff in the car. A van or car to lug the big stuff in as few trips as possible gets my vote, especially if the weather is pants!
