Private Water (bore hole)

We are going to look at a house with private water supplied by a bore hole. I have lived in a house with this before but as a child. What would I need to look out for? What questions should I ask about it at the viewing? The one we had as a child had a pump that broke down a few times (it was very old and my parents couldn't afford to buy a new one so my dad mended it each time) Any more recent experiences? Many thanks in advance.

Get the water testes to ensure it is fit to drink. Ask about any treatment system, maintenance, cost of running etc.

If it has private water, it probably also has private drainage. That could be a bigger issue so find is it a septic tank (may need upgrading at some point) or a treatment plant. Where does it discharge to etc.

If we bought the property it would be up to 5 but most often 2 - the bore hole only serves the one house. Will ask about crossing others land

It does indeed have private drainage too, I have a better knowledge of septic tanks oddly, I will be asking where it discharges to indeed.

    * quality of water. Any recent tests? Done by who?
    * reliability of supply. Does it ever dry up in summer?
    * reliability of delivery. Pump? Maintained\?
    * as suggested - it on the property's land or does it cross other land?

I'm intrigued as to what it involves... Dip test is only going to tell you whether it's bloody cold or not.

Not sure if your responce is related the joke responce (in whihc case i missed it), but if it was serious; you would only sample the water after a period of purging you wouldnt take a straight up dip sample,
