Black screen on Windows 10 Spring 2018 update

Well, I've been (trying to) update some Windows 10 VMs (VMware Player); it all seems to go fine and then their screen is just black when they reboot.
Is anybody seeing this kind of behaviour?
I'm trying various options to see if I can get one to complete successfully.
It looks like the system does come up, as Cortana started speaking to me when I pressed the Windows key in my black screen, but nothing made any windows appear.
Fortunately, I make a copy of the VMs before I start, so I can revert to best known and then take another run at it.
This time I think I'll uninstall VMware Tools before I start.

Happened to me on my Acer laptop. I had to revert to a previous windows version to get it working again. Think I will leave this new update for a while.Waddle you do eh?0

After what looked to a faultless install on mine and the sons PC's his has got the occasional black screen on startup. I thought that it was due to out of date Nvidia drivers as it booted into 800x600 (despite claiming to be 1980x1080) once but it's a had a black screen since updating. A reboot has so far solved the issue. I'm on AMD graphics and haven't had the same problem.0

Unfortunately, the advice there is not too much use if you have a black screen in front of you... :-/Colin_Maybe wrote: »https://windowsreport.com/display-not-working-windows-10/ has some solutions that may help.0 -

Can you RDP to it from one of the other VMs?
make sure the graphics drivers are updated before you try again.0 -
Have you updated VMWare Player to support 1803 build of WIndows 10?
Or try Win+Ctrl+Shift+B in the VM to restart the video driver0 -
I too had a problem with one machine updating Windows 10 from 1709 to 1803. It was also at the Cortona part where you would expect to be annoyed by Cortona's little speech that Microsoft impose upon on by default.
My problem, ironically, was that the "Hi I'm Cortona" section seemed to be skipped entirely. Maybe it was something to do with sound drivers. But I detest Cortona so much, I don't even care.0 -
I've now got exactly the same problem with a black screen and a mouse cursor.
I've tried multiple reboots but got nowhere so far.
As mentioned above, one of the suggested solutions is totally useless as you need the screen working in order to implement it!
Any further suggestions to help me fix the issue would be appreciated.0
