Thanks for this. I ended up using an old charger from a Samsung camera which had been bought from a good UK supplier. I feel safe with that.

Not just the gap between the high/low voltage sides but the quality of the windings on the transformer also.

Does the phone limit the charge rate now you havd the potential of sticking 1.5amps into the battery?

Unless its a well known branded charger, chuck it and get a poundland one. Seems they are not bad for the money, Maybe £2 or £3 not £1 though.

Agreed, 'Big Clive' on Youtube has taken a few of the Poundland ones apart and reverse engineered them, finding them consistently high quality (just a shame the two stores near me don't stock their latest brightly coloured 2A dual port unit).
Poundworld products on the other hand haven't faired so well, and should be avoided.

Just though I'd mention that the two chains aren't interchangeable for electronics despite serving the same market.

Obviously this is for chargers with an output at the lower end of the range. It's safe to charge a phone from a good 1A or 0.5A charger, it will just take longer. But if you want any kind of fast charging you have to be willing to spend a fair bit more.

I've just received a phone direct from China. It has a micro USB charger which is rated at Input 100 - 240V, 50 - 60Hz, 0.15A and Output, DC 5V, 1000 mA.

Just as a matter of interest what make of phone is it? Some of the better known makes like Xiaomi and ZTE are likely OK, some of the lesser known makes, maybe not so.

The phone is a Cubot. They are on sale from Amazon but the price is about 50% more than getting them shipped from China.

Also don't forget Maplin have a few days left, and have some outrageously good deals on some less common chargers

Good tip. I just picked up a 45w USB C charger for £7 (80% off).

The lads in the store told me it was looking like they'd still be around until mid to late June now. Don't know if that means Maplins as a whole or just the Chesterfield store, but bargain hunters have a little while yet (although the shelves are getting pretty bare now).
