Aerial sockets not working

gooddays
Hi,
We have recently moved house and there are aerial sockets in the living, dining and one of the bedrooms. they all look new but they don't work, there is also an older looking aerial socket that is on the skirting board in the dining room and that one works - I can trace the cable from that socket through the wall, up outside the wall and to the aerial on the roof, which makes sense.
I've taken off the plate for one of the aerial sockets that doesn't work, there is a copper looking cable a bit frayed going in through one end and another cable silver looking also a bit frayed going through the other end of a connector looking thing.
So, I figure there must be a connection maybe somewhere in the loft because there is nothing going from the aerial socket that does work.
In the loft I have found 2 cables taped together but cut..theres also an odd looking very thin cable that looks very old and in some areas I can see a glimmer of what I think is copper cable which is coming from the roof but I can't see if this is connected to anything under all the insulation up there.
My father in law thinks the problem is with the cables that are cut and that I should join them up to solve the problem. The thing is I'm not sure why they were cut in the first place...should I join them up? They do look like antenna cables...any advice please?? Really need to get at least the aerial socket in the living room working (sorry for the long post!)

If you want to fix it properly have a look for something that looks like this http://cpc.farnell.com/slx/27820hsr/aerial-amplifier-4-way-4g-lte/dp/AP03322?mckv=sz0Ud58AN_dc|pcrid|224680055011|kword||match||plid||pid|AP03322|&CMP=KNC-GUK-CPC-SHOPPING&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjsX1q5Do2gIVqpztCh3eVQTaEAQYBCABEgKDEvD_BwE
The aerial goes in and all the feeds go to the rooms. If you can trace all the cables give them their own feed into it. They work far better than those little Y shape splitters.0 -
You need a coaxial aerial tester. Then you can confirm what is connected to where.
And yes, coax cable slicing is common but very poor practice. It would be much better to get a proper powered amplifier/splitter.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -

The new cables might be for a satellite or cable tv which the previous owner has removed part of or for an aerial amplifier which has been removed. Try connecting an aerial of any sort to the cut cables and seeing if you get a signal in any of the rooms.0
