It's very much account details over card details expired or not, especially with online recurring payments.

I am currently battling a minor issue with a similar transaction, card expired but a subscription to a service was billed direct to my account (eg they use your bank account details and not the old card number)

I've contacted my bank to see if anything can be done to halt future payments and have cancelled the sub. Cost around £40.00 but lesson learned.

so its possible that the insurance company could take a continuous payment on a card that expired 363 days ago or maybe longer ?

    Yes.

There is a difference between a closed credit card, and an expired one.

You can also phone your credit card company and they are able to put through a CPA form that contacts the company to stop automatic renewals if you had trouble doing it with the merchant that's taking it going forward.
