The new J and S systems are still noisy to say the least.

If you ever add an extension to your home, the warm air system is less effective and adding a rad or new duct isn't as effective as adding a new rad to a conventional system.

Yes, it can also be troublesome to find a good conventional heating engineer, but there are many to choose from. With warm air your choice is very limited.

I had a J&S J25-32 warm air heating system for 24 years and like you I had to put up with BG moaning for years.

Keep door closed, remove door, more ventilation, cut a bigger hole in floor then the outside wall as 20 odd years of underfloor ventilation was no longer satisfactory. You probably had the same.

The last straw was the hole in the outside wall, the draft that caused

There was no one else in my area who was willing service it.

I eventually replaced it with a combi and radiators and am saving 30% or more in gas and no drafts in the kitchen plus the £300 odds they now would be wanting to maintain and service it.

Now I pay a local heating engineer £69 + vat once a year to service it.
over 73 but not over the hill.

If there is a small hole in a 40 year old flue, do consider the flue may be concrete/asbestos. You should get it tested for asbestos, and have it removed ASAP.

You won't find much choice in a replacement as most people have ripped them out years ago so there isn't much call for them any longer

Yes, you were right about that, as I found that only a few companies continue to make them. In the end, I found a very informative warm air heating blog maintained by a 'Mike The Boilerman'. He doesn't cater for new installations and only services and repairs boilers.

I found that he highly recommends another Johnson And Starley unit as a direct replacement for my model. This is what we have decided to get. :)

Much better than boilers, ugly pipework and radiators. IMO.

    I quite agree. :)

Great isn't it? :p I would like to also add that it can't have just been British Gas pressuring customers to ditch their old boilers. Nor can it be that all British Gas engineers were mercenary when it came to implementing the new policy. However, there was a definite shift in British Gas policy, around 2005, and it wasn't very helpful. It is undeniable. :(

Best thing to do would be to get a conventional radiator system. The latest J and S systems are problematic and not too many people can service them. They're noisy, unreliable and if you want to sell your property a potential buyer would be put off.

Some of them supposedly are, you are indeed correct. However, the WarmCair ones are meant to be quite reliable and not too noisy. We don't plan on moving and are going to have a punt. :)

Well, our old boiler is permanently switched off now, but thank you very much for the sound advice anyway. :)

BG's shift in around 2005 would coincided with stricter ventilation requirements, where anything less than 95% of the ventilation requirement of open flued appliances resulted in a at risk notice being issued and quoted for upgrading ventilation being given. The next thing that would be said by the customer is it's been there for 20 years and never been a problem and the quote refused and then the customer being told every year it's at risk.

It's not always easy to get the required ventilation of a warm air unit when there in hall cupboards as you then need compartment ventilation's etc.

Have been repairing-servicing wau's all my working life,so much trash is printed and advised by so called 'engineers'and armchair warriors.

Wau's need special consideration during service-repair events.

Some are known to have ACMs which the service-repair technician will be aware of and should not used as leverage for a customer to buy a new appliance.

Johnson&Starley have some advice and a replacement guide on their internet site.
