Switching after name change

Hi All,

I'm transgender and have recently changed my name by Deed Poll. I bank with TSB and have had so many problems with them that I want to switch out, possibly to M&S bank.

The problem I have though, is that I do not pass the 3 year address history because of my change of name (because, of course, Kayleigh didn't live there, Martin did. *shudder*).

I would resolve this by going into a bricks and mortar bank and taking my deed poll and applying there, bt it seems that I can't do that with M&S Bank.

Does anyone know if there is any way to 'link' me to my old name, or to somehow tell ID Check Systems that I am me?

The same thing happened with my gov.uk verify application.

Advice appreciated.

Kay

I am no expert but didn't want to read and run.

Have you got current ID with the new name on? I would think this needs to be your first port of call. Get ID in your name, then inform everyone you already have an account with of your name change, providing ID etc . This should mean your accounts then get reported to your credit file under your new name and thus linking you with your previous name. It will probably be a long process but you will need the ID (not just the deed poll) before creating any new accounts

Have you updated your name with any banking institutions?

Once you’ve done this, both your old and new name will be linked with your credit file and you shouldn’t have any issues opening accounts in your new name. There may obviously be a time delay for this though.

Incidentally, since being married I have switched an account in my maiden name to one in my married name without any issue - so you may be able to open the account under your old name (not ideal, I know), switch and then provide M&S with your change of name details once the account is open.

    Hi Kay,

Others have given you good advice here, I work in a bank and we accept Deed Poll letters for change of name and title.

Have you changed your name with TSB? you can then switch the account out to M&S, the other option could be to switch and apply for an account in your previous name and then provide them with the deed poll letter.

This will help as you will have a link to you at your address, but understand this may not be the route you want to go down, and that is perfectly acceptable.

If you dont want to do that, then you can open an account with any high street and switch to them? What has made you chose M&S?

I hope this has helped and you can find the best route suitable for you.

Anything else I can help with just keep this thread updated.

  • Thanks everyone.

I have tried changing my name with TSB by providing Deed Poll. They declined it because it wasn't done through a company, and I had just made one myself (with the same legal wording). So I explained to them that it was a legal document even without a 3rd party company's stamp of approval (which means sweet nada anyway).
I then suggested they take a look at my driving license which is in my new name. That was over a month ago and I am still waiting for them to action it, hence my wanting to leave but wanting to set up a new account in my new name.

In terms of M&S I was switching for the £125 gift card, but I am in an IVA and have just realised that they have a minimum £500 overdraft which I am not allowed to have on my IVA terms. So it's back to the drawing board. At least with some of the other banks I have one I can physically waltz into and flash my ID at them.

I have also joined Experian and sent them a form linking my names and addresses. I hope this will sort out the issues.

    Thanks everyone.
