Should I have been in touch

My partner and I are first time buyers so are pretty clueless about everything

Our completion date is next week on the 8th. We have had our mortgage confirmed and where kind of waiting for our solicitors to be in touch to tell us if they were needing anything from us (well my partner since it's in his name)

We were getting a bit concerned that we hadn't heard so emailed them last night.

The current owner has been in touch to say his lawyer is concerned that they have only just heard from ours and might be pushing it a bit to get completed by the date we wanted.

I have just sent an emailing to check that we are on track for completing by the chosen date, which was also recently changed from the Monday due to the bank holiday that they hadn't realised was happening.
I was just wondering if it's our fault for not being in touch with our solicitor to see what we needed to do?
I just thought there would be various bits they would need to sort and once that was done they'd let us know since it's their job.

If your solicitor and your vendors solicitor have only just been in touch then there is no way you will complete next week. You will be lucky if its before July!

I'm not sure how you know that your completion date will be the 8th if that isn't something your partner has yet discussed with the solicitor? The completion date isn't definite until contracts are exchanged.

We're in Scotland if that makes any different. The documents for the mortgage are all ready to be signed.
They've been in touch, just not since the start of April when they were trying to reorganise the date of entry.

We have been in touch about that with the solicitor and that was the last contact we had back in April.
I'm not sure what to call it then but the 8th is the date that us and the previous owner have agreed to as a date of entry.
We are in Scotland if that makes a difference.

Ok, we call it the date of entry here, call it the completion date and I'll assume you're in England or Wales!

Nevertheless, if your partner hasn't concluded missives then there is not yet a binding contract.

April was only 13 hours ago...

I suggest your partner phones them. It's possible they're not responding to you because you're not their client. 8 May is certainly still feasible.

Sorry! I was trying to find some form of answer before and I couldn't remember what it was actually called after reading completion date quite a few times.

He's at work most of the time and I'm a SAHM so that's why I'm the one dealing with it all. They did say in a reply to my email that they would now need to be in touch with him.

He's been asked to go in to sign stuff this week so I presume that is the missives? Should we/he been in touch earlier about all that or should the solicitor have let us know they were ready to go?

I should have said start of April.

No, the missives are signed by the solicitors. He'll be signing other stuff, probably just the mortgage deed. Concluding the missives doesn't need to relate to whether or not he's signed that, they may be waiting for something else. Hard to say without knowing more about the current position.

Oh. Well as far as I know we've done everything they wanted bar the signing of the documents which he's able to do at the end of the week. But like you say that doesn't really matter.

    Thank you.
