OP, it's not just SP. I've had arguments with EDF about them changing our DD. Our consumption doesn't change that much, weather dependant, and I know what I expect to use/pay each year. We're around the £950 a year mark, so you don't need a maths degree to work out that's about £80 a month. Unfortunately, our anniversary with them is June, so by September we're in decent credit, they try and put the DD down to £60, I argue to keep it at £80, they agree to £70, by March we're in debt, they try and put the DD up to £90, I argue for £80, we settle on £85. By June we're straight and it starts again. Obviously switching is an option, but they are still cheapest for me.0

And don't forget with Scottish Power:
We think it is fair to reward Direct Debit customers who are in credit. That!!!8217;s why we offer a Direct Debit Credit Payment scheme which provides a compensation payment based on the amount of credit you have.
Under our Direct Debit Credit Payment Scheme, you!!!8217;ll receive a payment from us if your account is at least £133 in credit at your next annual assessment. The payment will be automatically credited to your account.
You!!!8217;ll get £1 back for every full multiple of £33 above the minimum credit value of £100.

I claimed for this a few years back. They were awkward about it though and tried to claim that I needed a credit balance for over a year. It says nothing about that on their site and I escalated it to a manager and they eventually paid out.0
