87 day gas bill 434 pound !!!

Options
Hi All,
This is a first for me getting a bill for this much.. I am not sure how to tackle handling SSE with this but have tried to reason with them that there is no way we use 10 units of gas a day.. (889 units in 87 days?) Ive read the meter daily and we are using 2-3 units.. nothing has changed with our heating settings/ hot water from the billing time ( Jan-April) and we have no gas appliances. They are trying now to tell me that if we base the bill on the last reading I gave in October to the reading I gave in April then it works out to 5 units a day.. but.. well im not convinced we use that much as the readings ive done daily say 2-3. The boiler is new.. and ive already had the plumber in to check its all functioning ok What do i do now?

Are you reading the actual meter or the In House Display ?

I am thinking that you are entering the kWh readings rather than the cuft or m3 figures.

There's no way you have only used 2, 3 or even 5 units a day during the winter.
    10 is probably right.

Is your meter metric or imperial, this makes a massive difference to consumption. 1 imperial unit is equivalent to 2.83 metric. The average UK household will use around 3 metric units of gas per day, this is a very rough calculation though. Based on that 5 units per day from October to April is about right, it sounds like they've under estimated your previous bill which has caused this one to come as a shock!

Double check when you last actual meter reading was and figure out the average of that, if you've got some from a similar time last year compare them!

I work energy complaints on a daily basis and this wouldn't jump out as excessive usage to me!

You have no way of knowing the OP couldn't use 3 unit a day during the winter. There is no information given by the OP that makes it possible to give out that sort of advice.
I have looked at my gas (heating/water only use) and from Jan 1st to March 31st inclusive, we used 337m3 so less than 4 units a day.

Depends what OP means by a unit . Is it a kwh, a metric unit or an imperial unit ?.
Occasionally suppliers bill for the wrong type of meter unit. If you have a metric meter and they bill for an Imperial meter the bill is almost three times too much.
One metric unit is approx 11 kwh s and an imperial unit is approx 31 kwhs.
This can happen after switching suppliers or a meter exchange.

1 Dec, my gas reading was 192
1 Mar. my gas reading was 463.

Total of 271 cubic meters used in 90 days.

I make that 3 a day, that is with gas heating and gas cooker.

    87 day gas bill 434 pound !!!

I don't think that is impossible or wildly improbable.

This house can cost £4.50 to £5 a day in the coldest weather, about £1 a day in summer.

Edit: slight qualification, that's gas and electricity together, of which gas is about 100 to 120 kWh units a day in winter, and about 3 a day in summer.

I'm wondering why the OP has a gas bill when they state they have no gas appliances.

Rather suggests that they only use gas for heating and hot water. And have no other type of gas appliance e.g. a cooker, hob.
